Co-creating an environment and a future that is sustainable and is inclusive to people of all abilities, ages, races, religions, genders, etc.
When entering a building or institution, one may gather and absorb information about its values, priorities, and goals, through observations of their architecture, design, amenities, services, etc. For example, at Wilfrid Laurier University, several common spaces, such as the Science Atrium, have incorporated plants into their interior environment. Laurier has also eliminated the sale of bottled water by all campus restaurants and vending machines, and has introduced bike and car share stations at various locations.
These, and several other examples represent not only the actions that WLU has taken to become a more sustainable and eco-friendly environment, but they also represent a message that WLU is attempting to relay to their students, faculty, staff, and outside observers. Through the university’s investment in “green” spaces and services, they demonstrate that this is something that they value, and are willing to invest in.
Similarly, I believe that when we design and adapt spaces for those with diversabilities, we are not only making them more accessible and usable, we are also sending a clear message to community members of all abilities that this is an institution that welcomes you, and values your presence and inclusion.
As an innovator, an artist, a partially-sighted student, and as a community member, I see an opportunity and an obligation to co-create and adapt spaces, services, amenities, etc. which are accessible, sustainable, and socially inclusive.
