Yugo is a learning and knowledge platform that helps connect people to culture. We work with teachers in schools, and newcomers from Gr.2- Gr.10. We provide cultural consulting in the form of training programs, courses, games, challenges, surveys, and individual or group coaching. This venture has evolved through the use of resources from the Social Entrepreneurship Option and the Innovation Labs at Wilfird Laurier University. This option provided us the space to expand and explore the idea with support from professors and social professionals in the community.
Yugo wants to work with school districts in creating and implementing long term solutions that address the challenges immigrant students face.
Immigrant and refugee students have faced cultural barriers within the system and felt that efforts of the schools were not enough to help them integrate with classmates and peers. This resulted in breeding cyber and physical bullying, and slow development. Our solution impacts these students and allows them to integrate into the school.
Our impact extends to teachers, who become aware of cultural sensitive topics regarding race, religion, class, traditions, and beliefs through our solution. We want to make sure that the environment in schools is welcoming, open, and culturally appropriate. We want to limit racism, peer pressure, bullying, harassment and poor performance; related to culture.
Yugo’s platform allows to educate and empower users on culture, which is broad and very personalized to the community it is used by. Our goal is to connect people through culture and create an environment where cultural discussions are encouraged. We also want to help develop skillsets of newcomers related to the community there and showcase their individuality. Yugo wants to help make culture an accessible concept, where everyone is aware, and there is no discrimination due to culture.
