Hey everyone! My name is Brittany and I am a fourth year Communications major with an option in Social Entrepreneurship.

Being a student within Social Entrepreneurship and C3IL has allowed me to explore some of the complex issues within our amazing world and more greatly within the Waterloo region. The courses offer a range of hands on learning which allows us to create real life change within the community as well as on a larger scale on various projects throughout the world. We learn and understand how to create social, ethical, environmental and financial sustainability goals and solutions to many of the issues surrounding us.

The courses and experiences have taught me a number of skills that are transferable into my education in other disciplines as well as with career opportunities. We learn not only that success can have a variety of meanings and that there are more than just the profitable aspect to a business but also that improving the world with greater opportunities or environmentally conscious choices can create a larger and more long term impact. It has also taught me how to work with others, communicate in formal and informal settings in a non profit organization such as The Working Centre, which is located downtown Kitchener and those in a for-profit organization such as the City of Waterloo do business. How there are many similarities but also differences and understanding the needs of the particular group or individual you are working with is very important as it may always be changing. I have had the opportunity to expand my understanding of the different institutions and how they work in greater detail to give us real life experiences as well as work on a number of professional skills such as writing reports for various businesses and organizations or present ideas and solutions to a number of community members in council chambers. We have been given the tools to improve our understanding but the freedom to do it in a way that makes the most sense to the particular individual with a variety of topics and guidance from a number of professors and community member mentors. These skills have already begun to apply to the real world and is helping prepare me for life after graduation.
