Hi everyone, my name is Kenny Sedgewick and I am a fourth year Communications Studies student with an option in Social Entrepreneurship and minor in Environmental Studies.

Social Entrepreneurship is a fantastic opportunity to explore complex social issues both at the local level and wordily stage. The SE 400 course offers a way to take the theoretical and hypothetically learning from all four years of school and create a real-life situation aimed at gaining skills inside the classroom and, more importantly, outside of the school itself. In other words, this course interests me because of the requirements being heavily dependent on outside classroom work and the individual themselves.

My Environmental Studies minor reflects my interest and concern for environmental consciousness, but it was passion of animal conservation that put me in touch with my International Service Learning placement this past summer. Greece is the location for the oldest turtle conservation project on the Mediterranean and it was here that my interests and passions collided. Being interested in a subject and having passions multiplied into an idea describes how Social Entrepreneurship can change the mindset surrounding business and small ventures. I was introduced into waste management information and practices that caused a realization for myself and steered me in the direction to attempt at advancing the ‘re-use’ initiative. Thus far, Social Entrepreneurship has allowed me to grasp the amount of personal resources that anyone might have, including myself.

With graduation fast approaching, Social Entrepreneurship is teaching me the vast amount of ideas and opportunities available in this field, getting away from the simpler and more generic type of job titles. As well demonstrating valuable skills inside and outside of the classroom; with the help and connections from my peers a social venture, such as one of the classes ideas, is a possibility.
