Hello fellow C3IL students and welcome to potential and future C3 superstars! My name is Alexa Boyd and I am in my fourth year of Global Studies with a minor in Education and the Social Entrepreneurship Option.

Beginning in my first year at Laurier, I decided to add the Social Entrepreneurship Option onto my degree as a way to enhance my learning and to open my eyes to learning outside the classroom. Since then, I have taken a number of remarkable courses. A particularly unique part of the Option is the Global Studies Experience (GSE) which has now switched to the Arts Global Experience (AGX) inclusive to all Arts students.

As part of the GSE, I had the opportunity to take what I had learned in the classroom and apply it to an international experience. This past summer, I travelled to Denmark with four Canadian youth who then met up with other children from 11 other countries. For 4 weeks, the 47 children learned to work with one another and accept diversity as a positive and unique element to their camp experience.

Now back in Waterloo, I have been given the chance to take what I learned while abroad and work with local youth through and a Running and Reading program. Children from grade 1 to 6 learn to work together to participant in exercise activities as well as reading buddies. Being a part of this wonderful programming has opened my eyes in understanding how important it is for individuals to become involved in their communities in ways they feel they can truly contribute. In this sense, I have taken my passion for working with children through education and expanded it not only to the international community but also locally.
