Children Choosing Peace

In my final semester here at Laurier in Waterloo, I feel extremely grateful for the opportunities I have received to become involved in the community. One specific way I have interacted with the community is through an organization called The Ripple Effect Education (TREE). TREE allows individuals such as myself to visit elementary school classrooms and facilitate workshops regarding peace and conflict resolution. This is something I feel specifically passionate about.
When children are given the opportunity to work through their own problems, they are able to express their creativity and demonstrate how independent they can be. At times, I feel like we tend to not to give children the credit they deserve. By engaging in conversations about peace at a young age, these individuals begin to see the world in a different light. They appreciate differences and embrace new ideas. In a sort of cliché way, these are the people of tomorrow and it is so important that equality is practiced and understood.
I believe the Social Entrepreneurship option has helped to open my mind to ventures such as this. With several occasions visiting and discovering the community outside of the Laurier, hands-on courses such as those embedded in the SE option are extremely influential and for many students such as myself. As an individual from an outside town, it is easy to see Waterloo as a university city. The reality is, it is so much more. There are families, children, start-ups, room for growth, and endless opportunities to become involved. When we begin to recognize the university as a connector rather than a barrier to the outside community, that is when we will make the most out of our university experience.
