From being enrolled in the Social Entrepreneurship Option offered here at Wilfrid Laurier, I have had the opportunity to partake in many different projects that have allowed me to develop a new appreciation and understanding as to what it means to be a social entrepreneur. However, in my final year I was challenged in becoming my own social entrepreneur. Through this experience, I have developed a new perspective for what it means to be an active social entrepreneur and the responsibilities that uphold with it. Long days filled with research and longer nights losing sleep over the endless possibilities and questions that your venture presents. Personally, through the process of starting my own venture, the entrepreneurial side has my mind wondering with countless possibilities as to what my product can become, whereas on the social aspect allows me to narrow these ideas in order to relay the message I want to promote.
From obtaining a full education through the Social Entrepreneurship Option I was able to create my venture by developing a passion for the problem of the lack of environmental awareness and sustainability on campus. Through the courses required in the option, my venture is shaped and created through the guidelines I learned throughout the years. Thus, as a social entrepreneur, I am a student who is looking to make a change through social awareness and a strategic business plan to reach mass audiences in order to promote social awareness. In my perspective, to be a social entrepreneur you must think out side of the box – but inside it as well. You must be able to acknowledge your surroundings and find creative and innovative solutions that work well in the community, but also that work with your values.
